The countermark's host coin is a 6400 Réis piece from Brazil, and dates from 1751 to 1777. There are two types of the countermark known: an oval indent and a rectangle indent. While the rectangle indent was doubted to actually exist, the pictured coin proves it does, and is the only known example of that type. This coin was countermarked under the Ordinance of August 1798.Scholten (1951) mentions and shows a type of this coin with an oval with stylized 'E.D.' countermark next to a countermark of a small eagle above '22'. This coin was supposedly produced on/for Martinique (Scho/II 1440).
Interesting fact
The 22 Guilder coin from Demerara and Essequibo (Guyana) is interesting because it was one of the first coins to feature a portrait of a woman. The coin features a portrait of Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, on the obverse side. This was a departure from the traditional practice of featuring only male figures on coins, and it paved the way for future coins to feature women.
