Interesting fact
The obverse (front) side of the coin features a helmeted head of Athena, the goddess of wisdom, war, and crafts, which was a common motif on ancient Greek coins. The reverse (back) side of the coin depicts a griffin, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The griffin was a symbol of protection and guardianship, and it's believed that the people of Plataiai may have used this image to protect their city from invaders.
