Comment
The Cecil lion poaching is a case of illegal hunting of an African lion named Cecil, particularly well-known to scientists and tourists, which occurred on July 1, 2015 in Zimbabwe. The case, which received extensive media coverage, is symptomatic of the controversies surrounding trophy hunting.Born around 2002, Cecil lived mainly in Hwange National Park in the northern Matabeleland province. A major tourist attraction in the park, he was also one of the lions studied and tracked by researchers at Oxford University.
It was poached by Walter Palmer, an American big game hunter, who first wounded it with a bow or crossbow, before following it and finishing it off with a rifle some 40 hours later. The slaughter drew international media attention and outrage from the public, environmentalists, animal rights activists and politicians alike. The Zimbabwean government has said it wants Palmer extradited, and two other men are being prosecuted in the case.
In October 2015, the charges against Walter Palmer were dropped. In November 2016, those against Theo Bronkhorst, the organizer of the hunt, were also dropped. (Source : www.wikipedia.org)
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Cecil The Lion 2000 Francs coin from Cameroon is that it was issued to commemorate the life and legacy of Cecil, a famous lion who lived in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. Cecil was known for his distinctive black mane and was a popular attraction for tourists. Unfortunately, he was killed by a hunter in 2015, leading to widespread outrage and calls for greater protection for endangered species. The coin's design features an image of Cecil in his natural habitat, and the silver coin is a unique and beautiful tribute to this magnificent creature.
