The Saint Petersburg Mint was founded by Peter the Great in 1724 on the territory of the Peter and Paul's Fortress. It is an unique monument of the industrial Russian architecture of the late classicism (the architect Antonio Porto,1798-1806) and one of the biggest mints of the world, which mints on a level with coins, including commemorative and jubilee ones of precious metals, orders and medals, decorations and other articles of non ferrous metals and their alloys as well. The production of the mint is notable for the highest level of the artistic design, unexceptionable quality of minting. It is generally recognized and much in stable demand in Russia and abroad.

Interesting fact

The 1999 Russian 200 Roubles silver coin features a unique design that showcases the Peter and Paul Fortress, a historic fortress located in St. Petersburg, Russia. The fortress was built in the 18th century and served as a prison for political prisoners, including the famous Russian author, Fyodor Dostoevsky. The coin's design also includes the coat of arms of St. Petersburg and the inscription "St. Petersburg 1703-2003" to commemorate the city's 300th anniversary.
