On 25 May 2019, the Baltic Shipyard in St Petersburg held a ceremony to mark the launch of the nuclear-powered icebreaker Ural of Project 22220.

Unlike Arktika and Sibir, the other nuclear icebreakers of Project 22220, the Ural, the second serial universal nuclear icebreaker, was launched with the already installed twin-reactor power plant and a steam turbine RITM-200, a new generation reactor plant. Its technical parameters make it possible to extend the endurance of a nuclear icebreaker without recharging up to 7 years or longer.

Universal nuclear-powered icebreakers of Project 22220 are designed for:

independent pilotage of ships, leading convoys of vessels all year round in the Western Arctic region;
icebreaker escorting of vessels in shallower areas of the Yenisei estuary and the Ob Bay area;
towing of ships and other floating facilities in ice and ice-free waters;
assisting in the navigation of ships and performing rescue operations in ice conditions and ice-free waters.
The unique dual-draft design of the vessels will allow them to navigate both in Arctic waters and in the estuaries of polar rivers. They are to play the central role in the project for the implementation of year-round navigation through the Northern Sea Route.
