200 Kuna City of Split

In the center is the chest of the sarcophagus (today stored in the Archaeological Museum in Split) with a relief representation of the Good Shepherd on the front of the central aedicule, and the figures of the deceased, two spouses, on the left and on the right. The sarcophagus was found in the middle of the 19th century at the cemetery complex of the Solin Manastirine, and it dates from the second decade of the 4th century. The circular inscription ‘SPALATUM’ and ‘295. – 1995.’ around the edge. Spalatum appears in the sources as the name of a smaller settlement on the site of Diocletian's palace. Signature ‘KH’ of the designer Kažimir Hraste.

In cooperation with Zagrebačka banka d.d., Zagreb, the Croatian National Bank issued commemorative 1.000 and 500 Kuna gold coins and commemorative 200 and 100 Kuna silver coins to mark the 1700th anniversary of the Palace of Diocletian and the founding of the City of Split.
 

The mintages indicated on certificates are not correct due to the change on original plan for the mintage. The plan was to mint the following quantities of this coin:

• in the year 1995. mintage of 1000 coins, 
• in the year 1996. mintage of 1950 coins,   
• in the year 1997. mintage of 2050 coins.

However, in the year 1997. no coins were minted, reducing the final mintage to 2950 coins.

This coin was sold individually (1000 pieces) and in the following sets:

SET I. - KM#51 in set with KM#50, KM#52 & KM#53 (600 pieces)

SET II. - KM#51 in set with KM#53 (600 pieces)

SET V. - KM#51 in set with KM#50 (750 pieces)
