Few animals are as representative of Canada's unspoiled wilderness as the grizzly bear (Ursus arctos). Playing an intricate role in the biodiversity of Western and Northern Canada, this imposing mammal, which lives largely alone, has long been regarded as an important cultural and spiritual symbol. This magnificent series of coins from the Royal Canadian Mint depicts the majestic grizzly in various scenes from its daily life.About the design
The reverse design, by Canadian artist Lauren Crawshaw, is an evocative portrait of the remarkable bond between a grizzly bear family. A profusion of multi-dimensional details create a moment that has been beautifully reproduced by the Royal Canadian Mint's engravers. In this family scene, which takes place at eye level, the mother lies on the grassy plain at the foot of the softly lined mountains of Western Canada, beneath the clouds in the background. Her expression is touching, brimming with maternal love and attentive devotion to her offspring. One of the cubs is playing, perched on its mother's hip with character. Mouth open, he makes sounds and waves his front paws excitedly, as if telling a story to a captivated audience. The other, quieter cub lies close to its mother, nestling on the female's front paws. With his head turned towards the viewer, he seems to be staring at a point beyond the field of view, his gaze filled with innocence and hesitation. This scene reminds us that humans are the greatest threat to the grizzly's survival.
