Comment
Until the late 1800s, the bison reigned over the grazing animals of the Canadian Prairies, from Manitoba to Alberta. The hump between its shoulders and its thick mane are just two of its distinguishing features, making it a widely recognized symbol of power.A gregarious animal, the plains bison (Bison bison bison) travels in herds, whose many members protect each other and react collectively when they perceive a threat. They will stop at nothing to defend their calves.
The latest calves in a herd are usually born between mid-April and May, and weigh up to 25 kilograms. These red-coated calves walk and run within hours of birth, and it's not until the third month that their fur begins to darken to resemble that of adult bison. During their first year, bison live for 15 to 20 years in the wild, and it's mainly the female who feeds and raises them, and protects them from predators such as wolves and cougars.
