A fairytale wedding
On April 29, 2011, people the world over enthusiastically followed the moving wedding ceremony of Britain's most high-profile engaged couple.
The bride and groom met in 2001 at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. They became increasingly close, and by the time they graduated in 2005, they were officially a couple. It had long been predicted that they would marry, when Prince William proposed to Miss Middleton during a trip to Kenya in October 2010. Clarence House announced the engagement on November 16, 2010.
The couple chose to hold the ceremony at Westminster Abbey because of its "breathtaking beauty". This architectural masterpiece is brimming with stained glass, pavements, tapestries, paintings and numerous artistic creations. As a testament to the incomparable heritage of the men and women who have shaped British history, the abbey was the perfect place to celebrate this long-awaited moment in history.
The wedding celebration began at 11 a.m., following the arrival of Prince William and Miss Middleton in their respective state cars. After the ceremony, the newlyweds left the Abbey in the official 1902 baby carriage and paraded through the crowds gathered along the road leading to Buckingham Palace.
Countless well-wishers from all over the world followed the ceremony on television, on the Internet and through various other multimedia transmissions, reinforcing the feeling of goodwill that unites Great Britain, the Commonwealth and the rest of the world.
