The Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides) is a species of bass native to North America, found in the lakes and rivers of southern British Columbia, eastern Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba, Ontario and western and southern Quebec. Generally at the top of the food chain made up of fish sharing the same habitat, this hardy species is not only one of the most widespread on the continent, but can also occasionally become an invasive species threatening ecosystems, due to its great capacity for adaptation and survival. Extremely popular with anglers, the largemouth bass now populates waters the world over. The largemouth bass feeds on small fish and the babies of other large fish species, insects, crustaceans, frogs and even small mammals and birds. It prefers clear, slow-moving rivers with muddy or gravel bottoms, lakes and large ponds with shaded areas of aquatic vegetation and submerged logs, where it can hide in wait for prey. Avoids sunlight during the sunniest part of the day.
The largemouth bass is native to southeastern North America, from the lower Great Lakes to northern and eastern Mexico. Largely as a result of human stocking in the late 19th century, it is now found throughout the continental United States, most of Mexico and in many parts of southern Canada.
