For centuries, the aboriginal peoples of Canada's east coast took advantage of the riches of the Atlantic Ocean, but when the Italian explorer Giovanni Cabotto (John Cabot) discovered that fish could be harvested by the bucketful off the coast of the New World, virtually all of Europe took notice. The year was 1497. Faced with 150 lean days decreed by the Catholic Church, Europeans set their sights on this new, seemingly unlimited supply of cod. It was only a few decades before the French, Portuguese, Spanish and English were fishing off the coasts of what are now Newfoundland and Labrador, in ships that left home ports in spring and returned to Europe in autumn.
By the early 19th century, a series of communities had sprung up along the coast as hundreds of families sought their fortune in the abundant riches of the sea. This fishing culture proved incredibly self-sufficient as fishermen developed tools and techniques perfectly suited to their special relationship with Atlantic cod.
Invented in the early 1870s, the cod trap was so effective that it was used, virtually unchanged, for over a century. And despite the powerful trawlers that appeared after the Second World War, it's the image of fishermen lifting nets that still evokes this historic industry that shaped much of Atlantic North America.

Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 2007 Canadian $200 Gold Coin (Fishing Trade) is that it features a unique reverse design that showcases a fishing boat sailing through the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, with a fisherman casting a line into the water. The design is meant to symbolize the importance of the fishing industry in Canada and the monarch's role as the head of the Commonwealth. The coin's design was created by Canadian artist and coin designer, Susanna Blunt.
