Comment

Located in Greater Poland (Wielkopolska region) between the cities of Gniezno and Poznań, Ostrów Lednicki is the biggest island on the Lednica lake. This place served a central role in the historical origins of the Polish state. In all likelihood, it was the site of personal baptism of Mieszko I, his court and, symbolically – the entire state under Mieszko’s rule. Strategic location of Ostrów Lednicki was crucial in choosing the island for defensive and administrative center of the kingdom. The place was a witness of bygone glory of the dynasty. Ruins of pre-Romanesque architecture, including remnants of a fortified settlement, a walled ducal palatinate with a baptistery and a church inside prove the historic significance of the island. Most probably, the chapel was the first royal necropolis on Polish soil and the burial place of Bolesław I the Great sons. Immense political significance of Ostrów Lednicki is confirmed by numerous valuables, including a Byzantine staurotheke (cross-shaped reliquary for the wood from the Holy Cross), an ivory comb, a gold plated cover of a liturgical book, as well as other luxury goods made from gold, silver and precious stones found on the island.
