The reverse depicts John Vanderlyn's painting Landing of Columbus, 1492. Congress commissioned Vanderlyn in June 1836 to paint it for the Capitol Rotunda. He completed the work in 1846 and it was installed in 1847.

In the background is a stylized map of Hispaniola by Giovanni Battista Ramusio.
