Saint Gall (Latin - Gallus) was an Irish monk who evangelized in present day Switzerland at the beginning of the 7th century. The Abbey of St. Gallen was founded in 720 at the site of a small hermitage built by Gall a century before. The reverse depicts a legend in which Saint Gall had befriended a bear who initially sought to harm him. The bear then brought firewood from the forest so Gall could stay warm.
