Swiss engineers Niklaus Riggenbach, Olivier Zschokke, and Adolf Naef masterminded the construction of the Vitznau-Rigi Railway, on the shores of Lake Lucerne and the southern flank of Mount Rigi. The end point of the railway is Rigi Staffelhöhe, a point below the summit of Rigi, but the nearest point to the summit within Canton Lucerne.
