The 4618-metre-long Pilatus Railway is a mountain railway in Switzerland, the steepest rack railway in the world, with a maximum gradient of 48% and an average gradient of 35%. The railway was designed by Swiss engineer engineer Eduard Locher (1840 – 1910) and finished in 1889. The original steam-powered trains were switched to electric engines in 1937.
