High king Brian Boru depicted on the obvers  of the coin led the Irish King's into the battle of Clontarf against the Viking forces on the 23rd of April 1014. The battle resulted in an Irish victory and led to the breaking of the viking hold in Ireland.  However Brian Boru died in the battle.

This coin commemorates 1000 years since the battle. 1014 - 2014
