Space Shuttle Columbia launched from Kennedy Space Center on November 11, 1982. On board were NASA astronauts Vance Brand, Robert F. Overmyer, Joseph P. Allen, and William P. Lenoir. This was the first trip into space for all except Brand, who was making his second trip. After a successful mission, STS-5 landed at Edwards Air Force Base on November 16, 1982. Though this was Lenoir's only voyage into space, Allen, Overmyer, and Brand all made additional trips.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features an error in its design. The coin was minted with an incorrect image of the Space Shuttle, depicting it with a large, round fuel tank that was never actually used in any Space Shuttle mission. This error was only discovered after the coins were already produced and distributed, making it a unique and rare collector's item for coin enthusiasts and space history buffs.
