Ask anyone to name one of Canada's iconic symbols, and chances are they'll mention the uniform of the "Mountie", depicted in full color on the reverse of this commemorative coin. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), an integral part of our country's history since 1873, celebrates its 150ᵉ anniversary this year (2023). Since its incorporation as the North West Mounted Police (NWMP), the national police force has grown and modernized, striving to become more inclusive and diverse. This is reflected on the reverse of the coin: the colorful portrait of an RCMP officer - a world-renowned symbol of Canada and its law enforcement agencies - bears witness to the rich history of this police force and the contributions of its members.
Colorful relief
The world-renowned Red Serge and Black Horse are brought to life by dynamic finishes and the application of color to the relief.
An engraved background
Engraved on the reverse of the coin, the mountains of Western Canada form a fitting backdrop for this portrait of a female rider and RCMP officer, recalling the origins of the police force.
DID YOU KNOW?
On May 23, 1873, Parliament passed an act creating the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP), considered the founding date of the RCMP. This police force became the North West Mounted Police (N.W.M.P.) in 1898, the Royal North West Mounted Police (R.N.W.M.P.) in 1904, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.) in 1920, when it merged with the Dominion Police.
The reverse of the coin salutes the men and women of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The RCMP admitted its first female recruits in 1974; today, about one-fifth of its regular members are women.
Horses have always been associated with the RCMP. Today, they accompany the troop's 32 uniformed riders as they carry on a long-standing tradition: the world-famous RCMP Musical Ride.
Few symbols are as unmistakably Canadian as the red tunic and wide-brimmed hat of an RCMP officer. Recognized around the world, the RCMP has a long and rich history that is inextricably linked to that of our country. I've always loved the posters, comics and other images of the past that convey the unassuming strength of its members, usually depicted in the company of their trusty mounts in front of grandiose wilderness landscapes, such as the Rocky Mountains. All things Canadian. -STEVE HEPBURN, ARTIST
With its 150 years of experience, the RCMP has the opportunity to show all Canadians how it has evolved and how it continues to modernize. As we approach the RCMP's anniversary and the year that follows, we will reflect on our past with humility, demonstrate our evolution and highlight the role we play in keeping Canadians and our country safe. This anniversary will also be an opportunity to reinforce our commitment and pride in all members of the RCMP family, from our courageous past members to our incredible employees, whose passion for service continues to drive our organization forward. -ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE
