Oval 45 mm long by 33 mm wideWith its fine hand decoration and intricate patterns, the pyssanka egg is one of the most popular forms of traditional Ukrainian folk art. This carefully decorated Easter egg is a veritable treasure trove of symbolism: each motif, each color, conceals a deeper meaning that lends a special grace to its recipient. The creative process itself is a ritual based on a long tradition, predating the advent of Christianity, that has been lovingly passed down from one generation to the next. The pyssanka egg, in all its colorful splendor, remains an artistic celebration of life and rebirth, a token of esteem and a powerful symbol of protection. Indeed, as long as people continue to make pyssanky, it is said that good will prevail over evil.
Did you know that?
Since the egg is created using a wax-based batik writing method, it seems entirely consistent that the term pyssanka comes from the verb pysaty, meaning "to write". Note: pyssanka is the singular; the plural is pyssanky.
There are many different types of decorated eggs. Most of them are ornamental or symbolic. However, one color of hard-boiled egg, krashanky, is eaten for breakfast at Easter.
Although there are thousands of possible designs, the most common are geometric or plant motifs. Animals are more difficult to draw, but when they are, it is said that the recipient of the egg will be bestowed with the most beautiful characteristics of this totem.
Snaking lines and eternity bands are among the oldest and most widespread motifs. Without beginning or end, they symbolize harmony, immortality and infinity.
As a ritual, it was important to maintain a calm, positive and centered state of mind during the creation of the pyssanka egg. The raw egg is "written" on with melted beeswax and a stylus or kistka. Once the first lines have been drawn, the egg is dipped in a dye. The wax is then applied to the other parts of the composition to mask them. The process is repeated to cover the desired range of shades, from lightest to darkest. When complete, the wax is melted and removed to reveal a multitude of rich patterns and colors, all carefully crafted through this multi-layer process.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case adorned with the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case is accompanied by a black protective box.
