2016 marks the 40th season of the Toronto Blue JaysTM, who have given Canadians plenty of reasons to rally around their "national" team. With six Eastern Division titles, two American League pennants and two World Series championships under their belts, "Team Canada" is used to being the talk of the town, thanks to its thrilling games and incomparable moments. It's impossible to forget the 1992 World Series final, when the Blue Jays became the first team from outside the U.S. to win the Fall Classic, or the excitement that swept the nation when Joe Carter hit the home run that would win the World Series for the second time in a row - and on Canadian soil!
Now, after an electrifying 2015 season, the Blue Jays are poised to add more sensational moments to their fantastic 40-year history.
Did you know?
A typically Canadian debut: on April 7, 1977, it snowed for the Blue Jays' very first home game at Toronto's Exhibition Stadium. But the frigid temperatures didn't get the better of the home team, who beat the Chicago White SoxTM 9-5, thanks in no small part to Doug Ault's two home runs.
The original plan to grant the City of Toronto a Major League Baseball team included the relocation of the San Francisco GiantsTM. The team would then have been known as the Toronto Giants!
In a contest held in June and July 1976 to find a name for the team, over 30,000 entries were submitted; a specially trained jury selected 10 names from over 4,000 different suggestions. These were then submitted to the team's Board of Directors, who announced on August 12, 1976 that the name chosen for the baseball team was the Toronto Blue JaysTM.
As the name "Blue Jays" had been proposed by 154 participants, a draw was held to determine the winner of the grand prize, which included a pair of season tickets for the team's inaugural season and a trip to Dunedin, Florida, including all expenses, to attend the Blue Jays training camp.
When it opened on June 3, 1989, the SkyDome (renamed Rogers Centre in 2005) was the first stadium to feature a fully retractable motorized roof and an adjoining hotel offering rooms with a view of the field.
In 1992, just 16 years after joining the League, the Blue Jays made history by becoming the "youngest" American League expansion team to win the pennant, and the first team from outside the U.S. in Major League Baseball history to win the World Series!
The Blue Jays introduced their first mascot, BJ Birdy, in 1979. In 1999, she gave way to Ace, who has been entertaining local audiences ever since.
Selected 12 times to the All-Star Game and recipient of 10 Gold Gloves, second baseman Roberto Alomar was the first Blue Jays inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and remains to this day the only team player whose number has been retired by the organization. Fans attending Blue Jays home games can see his number, 12, hanging above the video screen!
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case adorned with the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case is accompanied by a colorful protective box.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 2016 Canadian Silver $20 coin featuring Elizabeth II and the Toronto Blue Jays is that it has a unique feature that sets it apart from other coins. The coin has a selective rose gold plating on the baseball player's jersey, adding an extra layer of detail and visual appeal to the design. This feature is not commonly found on coins, making it a distinctive and sought-after collector's item.
