Although the list of protected species may differ from country to country, most of Canada's bird species are protected under the provisions of the Migratory Birds Convention Act and the Migratory Birds Treaty Act. The migratory range of the magnificent mountain bluebird (Sialia currucoides) pictured on this piece extends from Canada to Mexico. As such, it is protected in both Canada and the United States under the provisions of their respective laws.Did you know that?
The bluebird is a member of the thrush family, which includes the familiar American robin.
Three species of bluebird live in Canada: the eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis), the western bluebird (Sialia mexicana) and the mountain bluebird (Sialia currucoides).
Despite their relatively small size, bluebirds can withstand temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius, provided cold snaps are short-lived.
Bluebirds feed on insects such as beetles, grasshoppers, spiders and caterpillars, as well as berries, berries and seeds.
During the mating season, the female bluebird is interested not only in the male's plumage, but also in the location and quality of the cavity he has chosen for the nest.
The bluebird population was in decline before amateur birdwatchers decided to build and install nest boxes in open areas and on fence posts, hoping to attract pairs to nest there, protected from predators and weather conditions.
When a predator destroys its eggs or attacks its chicks, the bluebird abandons its nest to find another, sometimes up to 200 kilometers away.
In Canada, the bluebird is considered a migratory bird, but it is surprisingly hardy on Canadian soil, often returning to its breeding grounds in March, a month when snow and cold still hold the country's landscape in their grip.
