It's largely thanks to sailing ships that North America looks the way it does today. Indeed, without the ability to be carried by the winds, early explorers would never have ventured out on unknown seas. The brigantine was a common sight at sea during the "golden age of sail". This two-masted sailboat was rigged with square sails on the foremast and gaff sails on the mainmast. The square sails enabled the yacht to take advantage of the trade winds and currents, while the gaff sails, set lengthwise along the ship, helped it to sail into the wind. This combination made the brigantine ideal for coastal sailing, as winds vary more along the coast. It was an efficient seal-hunting vessel, and also a cargo ship to the West Indies or Brazil.
Each sailboat was designed to exploit certain advantages. Whether it was speed, maneuverability or cargo capacity, the nimble little brigantine played an important role in North America's maritime history.
Despite today's means of transport, which enable us to travel ever faster, higher into the air and further into the depths of the ocean, these magnificent vessels still have an allure that fascinates us every time we spot them in a Canadian port. They immediately send us sailing into a dream world, because after all, our nation owes a little of its origins to these splendid sails.
