In a design inspired by the cover of Superman Annual #1, the Man of Steel appears in all his glory.
Published in 2012, Superman Annual #1 is the first annual Man of Steel issue in the New 52 universe, which relaunched DC Comics titles in 2011 with revamped storylines. As the caption of Superman Annual #1 hints, the Man of Steel faces alien extinction with the return of Helspont, a Daemonite who sees humanity as the key to his people's genetic salvation. Despite Superman's confident attitude on the cover - and on the reverse side of the coin - he and the heroes of Earth are taking a beating. Helspont teaches Superman a lesson after subduing him, saying he wants to spare him because he sees him as the defender of his "investment". His final sarcasm about his father, Jor-El, makes Superman reflect on his role and this new threat to humanity: "Everything I've accomplished, every life I've saved, what good is it all if someone far more powerful than me can come along and wipe out all my efforts?"

Did you know?
- The romantic relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane is absent from this universe. Lois doesn't even work with Clark at the Daily Planet anymore! After Galaxy Communications bought the paper, Lois works in the television division.
- The "Protector of the People" story features several DC Comics superheroes, including Martian Manhunter, Grifter, Starfire and Hawkman.
- Kryptonian armor replaces Superman's costume - gone are the red jerseys, and the previously yellow belt is now red.

The adventures of Clark Kent, Superman's true identity, have captivated millions of readers and movie fans since 1938. Near Smallville, Kansas, Jonathan and Martha Kent find a baby from outer space, rescued from the destruction of Krypton, its home planet. The couple raise the child as their own, instilling in him profound values and convictions that will lead him to use his superhuman powers for good. As an adult, Clark passes for an affable journalist in the big city of Metropolis, but as Superman, his battles against the worst villains make him a powerful symbol of bravery, strength and justice.
