Comment
Built in 1938 by Canadian Pacific, locomotive 2850, a Hudson 4-6-4 type (four head wheels, six drive wheels, four carrying wheels), was an impressive sight with its semi-clad lines, worthy of noble passengers...King George VI and Queen Elizabeth travelled aboard her during their 1939 visit from Quebec City to Vancouver. For the occasion, the boiler was sheathed in stainless steel and the engine was painted silver and royal blue. Royal escutcheons adorned the front and sides of the tender, and royal crowns the gangways on either side. Thus adorned, the locomotive attracted as much attention as its illustrious passengers!
The 2850 set a North American record by completing the 4,921-kilometer (3,061 mi.) route without a hitch. In honor of this feat, all 4-6-4 semi-coaches were decorated with wreaths and christened "Royal Hudson".
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 2008 Canadian $20 Silver Elizabeth II (Royal Hudson) coin is that it has a unique rectangular shape, unlike most coins which are round.
