Propelled by a powerful wingbeat, the red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) looks utterly majestic as it flies over the open spaces where it loves to hunt. This magnificent bird of prey is an agile hunter who, thanks to its broad wings, can glide elegantly and effortlessly for hours on end. With its remarkable eyesight, it misses nothing of what's going on below, even from the sky. Gifted with great adaptability, it can live in a variety of habitats, but is usually seen perched at the top of a tree or pole, silently scanning the ground for prey. Its high-pitched, hoarse call is easily recognizable, and serves as a sonic reminder of the Red-tailed Hawk's resilience and strength in the Canadian wilderness, which is conveyed in the moving motif of this splendid fine silver coin.Did you know?
The red-tailed hawk and the ferruginous hawk share the title of North America's largest hawk.
It was first observed in Jamaica, hence the species name jamaicensis.
The red-tailed hawk distinguishes colors just as we do, but it can also see ultraviolet light, which is invisible to us.
A monogamous species, it mates with a single partner throughout its life and will only take on a new one if the first dies. Couples also tend to return to the same nesting area.
The Red-tailed Hawk's diet consists mainly of small mammals and rodents, notably ground squirrels and mice. It also feeds on reptiles, small birds, and even insects and fish.
All adult red-tailed hawks have the colorful tail that earns them their name, but the young ones don't! Young buzzards tend to have paler plumage than adults. They also hunt differently, preferring to soar above the ground to seize their prey rather than soar high and then swoop down as adult buzzards do.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case adorned with the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with an illustrated protective box.
Interesting fact
The Regal Red-Tailed Hawk coin features a unique reverse design that showcases a hawk in mid-flight, with its wings spread wide and talons outstretched, set against a background of radiating sunbursts. This design not only adds visual appeal but also symbolizes the hawk's powerful and regal nature.
