A FIRST! Piece produced using an advanced colorization technique with "innovative effect"!Algonquin Provincial Park in autumn is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Canada. In this region that inspired world-renowned landscape painters Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, nature reveals itself to those who take the time to observe it. Like Thomson, many nature lovers use the waterways and trails of Algonquin Park to discover the backcountry through activities such as camping, canoeing and fishing, and to reconnect with nature. The highlands of Algonquin Park are the source of six major rivers: Nipissing, Amable du Fond, Petawawa, Bonnechere, Opeongo and Madawaska. The majestic Madawaska River is representative of the region's unique geography, where the southern forests of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Lowlands meet the boreal forest at the southern edge of the Canadian Shield.
Ontario's first provincial park was created in 1893 to preserve the region's waterways and protect the land from human occupation. The region was already exploited by loggers, who felled its tall white and red pines for export. Although logging continued after the park's creation, care was taken to conserve stands of trees so that forest products would not be depleted. Originally, the park was half the size it is today. Surrounding lots of land were gradually added over the century that followed its creation. In 1992, Algonquin Park was named a Canadian National Historic Site for its contribution to park management practices in Canada, its innovative approach to welcoming visitors, its historic buildings and structures, and its inspiring influence on Canadian identity. Today, the park is one of Canada's most popular destinations for outdoor activities and all-season camping, maintains an active forestry operation and is home to a major research center in biology and environmental sciences.
The coin's motif depicts the rapids of the Madawaska River, highlighting the raw beauty of this wild territory.
