Design

Canadian artist Cathy Bursey-Sabourin, a specialist in heraldry, has recreated the crests of Canada's 13 provinces and territories on a series of puzzle-like pieces that fit around the central piece to form a set of 14 elements. Superbly coloured, the crests are presented according to the order in which each province and territory entered Confederation. They are linked by a garland of maple leaves, with a ribbon running through them, showing the dates of entry. The centrepiece features the Centre Block on Parliament Hill, enhanced by selective gold plating, and the Centennial Flame in the foreground. Two dates (1867 and 2017) frame the Peace Tower, whose clock reads 10 p.m.: the time when Canada Day fireworks usually start.

Did you know?

• This puzzle piece is inspired by the Centennial Flame in the center of the design. This flame is located just behind the Queen's Gate, in the forecourt of the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings. Originally a temporary installation to mark Canada's centenary in 1967, it became permanent due to its popularity. Its basin, made of red Canadian granite, is decorated with bronze heraldic crests, floral emblems and the accession dates of the provinces and territories that were part of Confederation in 1967. The water represents Canada's three oceans, and the flame, which burns 365 days a year, symbolizes the light that guides Canada into the future.
• Created on April 1, 1999, 32 years after the country's centennial, Nunavut is Canada's youngest territory. Consequently, it is not represented on the Centennial Flame. Its round crest also stands out from those of the other provinces and territories, with their traditional pointed shape.
• The coin was designed by Cathy Bursey-Sabourin, a Canadian heraldic artist who has created some of Canada's best-known emblems.
