Renowned for its strength and ability to survive in an inhospitable climate, the polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is one of the best-known emblems of the Canadian North. This "King of the Arctic" is North America's largest land carnivore. It is easily recognized by its thick white fur, which keeps it warm while hunting seals on the pack ice. Thanks to the incomparable jade inlay on this fine silver coin, the Royal Canadian Mint proudly pays tribute to this master of the ice and its ecosystem. For thousands of years, the beauty of jade captivated the peoples of ancient China and the pre-Columbian New World, a fascination that continues to touch collectors and jewellers today. Adored by the Chinese as a symbol of the soul and synonymous with longevity and purity, jade is synonymous with good fortune and protection in the ancient art of feng shui. The therapeutic virtues of this precious stone are numerous: it stimulates agility and creativity, and is associated with happiness and harmony.
The jade inlay on the reverse of this piece is made of Canadian nephrite, mined in British Columbia. This stone is prized for its strength and mirror-like finish when polished. According to some sources, Chinese settlers searching for gold in the Fraser River and on the Dewdney Trail were the first to spot deposits of jade, in 1886. In the 1930s, European miners also found huge fragments in the province's gold mines. But it wasn't until the mid-20th century that commercial jade mining developed in British Columbia. Since then, the province has become one of the world's most important jade producers.
