The Atlantic puffin is one of Canada's favorite seabirds. This brightly-colored bird is part of the seascape of Newfoundland and Labrador, where it has been the official avian emblem since 1992.- The puffin's livery, similar to that of the penguin, changes radically between breeding cycles: in winter, its beak is dull gray, matching the neutral hues of winter weather, and in spring, it's painted in brilliant colors! The contrast is so marked that we once thought they were two species.
- The puffin has wings, but flying is not its forte: it has to flap its wings at up to 400 beats per minute to keep itself aloft! Its catastrophic landings are also notorious: more often than not, it knocks over any bird that has the misfortune to be in the area where it's about to land.
- In the water, on the other hand, he's an outstanding swimmer! Its webbed feet propel it, and its apnea skills enable it to dive to a depth of 61 meters and hold its breath for almost a minute.
- When hungry, puffins dive to catch as many fish as possible. On average, it catches ten fish at a time, but one puffin has been known to return from a fishing trip with sixty fish in one go.
