99.99% pure silver with selective coloring, Fresnel etching and black-light technologyNicknamed the "Montreal Incident", the famous UFO phenomenon is reproduced on the fourth piece in our Mysteries on Canadian Soil series. Its colorful, photoluminescent pattern transports you to the rooftop pool of the Hotel Bonaventure Montreal on the evening of November 7, 1990, when a mysterious object suddenly appeared in the sky.
"I remember that evening very well: my whole family was watching a news report about an unidentified object in the Montreal sky, and I was totally captivated. Conceiving this piece gave me the chance to marvel and recreate the energy I felt that evening, while rekindling my childhood fascination with UFOs!" - Patrick Belanger, artist
"This is my second project in the Mysteries on Canadian Soil series, and I can say that these pieces are among my favorites! The stories they tell are mysterious and intriguing, and they'll open your mind to the possibility that UFOs really do exist." - Christa Bruce, Product Manager
"The Place Bonaventure UFO was observed by dozens of witnesses as it appeared to float above the hotel's rooftop pool. Guests alerted hotel staff, including a security guard, who contacted a reporter. All witnesses claim to have seen the motionless object floating in the sky, displaying a strange assortment of lights reminiscent of a clock. The photos taken that evening remain highly controversial. Do they show the reflection of underwater lights from the pool? Spotlights from nearby skyscrapers? An aurora borealis? Even the RCMP were stunned that night, and the incident is still considered one of the strangest UFO phenomena to have occurred in Canada." - Chris Rutkowski, Science Editor
"This motif was really fun to create, since I stayed at the Bonaventure Hotel just a few years after the Montreal incident. Given the three-quarter perspective, I came up with the idea of creating concentric circles emanating from the UFO, as well as a Fresnel effect for the six light beams, reflecting the light in an exceptional way. For the color application, the challenge was to align the colored sections with the many straight, clean lines of the pattern: the buildings, windows, steps, terrace and pool. This created an interesting effect, as the light beams are also visible on the pool surface." - Stan Witten, Senior Engraver
Did you know?
The incident depicted on the coin is not the only UFO phenomenon observed in Montreal. In fact, according to the Groupe de recherche en ovniologie's annual survey, it is one of the Canadian cities with the most reported sightings each year.
November 7, 1990, 7:20 p.m.: A tourist was enjoying the rooftop pool at the Hôtel Bonaventure Montréal when green and yellow beams of light from a huge metallic object suddenly lit up the night sky. The woman alerts the lifeguard, who calls the hotel security officer. Soon, hotel guests, employees and managers gather to observe the strange flying object, which continues to hover in place. When the beams of light suddenly redouble in intensity, the police are called. Disconcerted, the first officer on the scene contacts his superiors, and soon afterwards, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canadian Army and even NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) are said to be investigating the mysterious object. Shortly after 10 p.m., dense cloud cover concealed the UFO. Photographs taken by a journalist nevertheless leave a tangible trace of this unexplained phenomenon.
