Designed by artist Kerri Weller, the coin is based on the poppy wreaths that are a common sight at commemorative services held each November 11 in Canada (Remembrance Day). A solemn symbol of remembrance, a red Murano glass poppy is centrally positioned against the coin’s proof finish. A wreath of poppies (Papaver rhoeas) forms a circular shape that represents continuity and hope behind the cross-shaped ribbon that bears the incuse text “LEST WE FORGET N’OUBLIONS JAMAIS”.

A Murano glass poppy (a first for the Mint) adorns the 2019 commemorative coin created in tribute to the men and women who lost their lives serving their country. Behind the red Flower of Remembrance, an engraved motif depicts a wreath of poppies like those laid at the foot of war memorials every year on November 11. Superimposed on these famous Flemish wildflowers, a ribbon arranged in the shape of a cross carries the promise made to the fallen. A reminder of the sacrifices made in wartime in the name of peace. Braided into a wreath and placed on our monuments, the bright red poppies are the solemn mark of gratitude from a people who will never forget.

This 2019 fine silver coin is a tribute to courage, determination and sacrifice.

"The poppy (Papaver rhoeas) is a moving symbol that recalls to memory our veterans, their sacrifices and their common quest for peace on this land of ours. To create the motif for this piece, I drew on my own family's wartime memories, which put me in the right frame of mind to explore grief, remembrance and hope." Kerri Weller, artist

"We had never created a Murano glass poppy before, and the result is spectacular. The message it sends is very clear. And it's through the wreath, each flower of which stands out from the others in its own way, that we chose to represent the many individual stories of sacrifice and remembrance. It was a real honor to be part of this project." Erica Maga, Product Manager, Royal Canadian Mint

Did you know?
Written in 1915 by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae of Guelph, Ontario, the poem In Flanders Fields inspired the wearing of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance.
Poppies flourished in Flanders during the Napoleonic Wars, but disappeared as soon as the troops withdrew. The same was true of the First World War: bombing raids disturbed the limestone soil, which was suddenly saturated with lime from the rubble, creating the ideal conditions for the (brief) presence of Papaver rhoeas on the battlefields.
In 1921, the country's Great War Veterans Association - forerunner of the Royal Canadian Legion - officially declared the poppy the Flower of Remembrance.
Today, this flower honours the memory of 117,000 Canadians who lost their lives serving their country. To mark Remembrance Day, it is worn from the last Friday in October to November 11.
Perhaps you remember a time when the poppy worn as a buttonhole had a green center. You'd be right: from 1980 to 2002, this was indeed the case, but the black center made a comeback thereafter, since it corresponds more closely to the poppy's true color.

Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a double-shell case featuring the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case is accompanied by a black protective box.Automatically translated
