Reverse
The piece, by Canadian artist Glen Loates, features a selectively colored engraving of a baby barren-ground caribou, just a few weeks old and not yet weaned from its mother's milk. Curious, it looks up and turns its head to face the observer. Selective touches of color bring the detailed engraving of the young animal to life, recreating the contrasts between pale brown and salivary white, as well as the charcoal tones of its eyes, muzzle and hooves. At the fawn's feet stretches a mosaic of pastel hues, a brilliant assortment that evokes the colorful explosion of vegetation triggered by the arrival of spring on Canada's northern tundra. In Canada's northern tundra, the arrival of spring triggers an explosion of brilliantly colored flowers, and the wide-open spaces of these northern lands are home to large herds of barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus). This is their gestation season, when female caribou give birth to a calf. Precocious by nature, the baby caribou learns quickly: less than an hour after birth, it can already stand on shaky legs; before the end of its first day of life, it has become stable enough to roam alongside its mother. To help it survive its first year, the calf stays close to its mother, who can protect it from predators such as wolves, grizzlies and eagles. For the first month, the fawn feeds exclusively on its mother's milk. Later, it begins to graze on flowers, lichens and mushrooms, diversifying its diet to build up strength for the coming winter.Packaging
