Theme: Rail transport picks up speedFifty years after the completion of Canadian Pacific's transcontinental rail line, a new generation of powerful, sleek locomotives was inspiring renewed interest in trains across North America. The Jubilee, whose name evokes a milestone in Canadian Pacific history, captured the public imagination with its considerable cruising speed and semi-hubby design, and quickly became known as the champion of rail transport.
Commissioned in 1936, this specially designed 4-4-4* F2a locomotive featured high-pressure nickel-steel boilers and giant 80-inch (203 cm) diameter propelling wheels capable of cruising speeds of over 160 km/h (99.4 mph). In fact, of the five locomotives built, number 3003 left its mark on history by reaching a speed of 181 km/h (112.5 mph) - a record unmatched for 40 years!
It was a time of excitement and innovation. More than half a million Canadians admired the Jubilee locomotives at the head of demonstration trains that toured Canadian cities before providing regular passenger service. Locomotives 3000 and 3002 powered the Royal York between Toronto and Windsor, Ontario; locomotive 3001, the Chinook between Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta; and locomotives 3003 and 3004, the Viger between Montreal and Quebec City, Quebec.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Jubilee Locomotive coin is that it features a unique design that showcases a steam locomotive, symbolizing the Queen's journey on the royal train throughout her reign. The coin's design also includes a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, making it a special collector's item for those interested in numismatics and royal memorabilia.
