The visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Canada in 1939 made history as the very first visit by a monarch to North America. The royal visit was the perfect opportunity for the young, self-sufficient country of Canada to show itself at its best. Eight years earlier, a number of colonies had gained their independence from Great Britain under the Statute of Westminster, and for the Canadian people, the royal visit gave meaning to this act.Planning for the Royal Visit took more than two years. For this ambitious 29-day, east-west, cross-Canada journey - a round-trip train journey of almost 14,000 kilometers - Canadian Pacific and Canadian National launched a royal train equipped with the best carriages they had to offer. Aboard the convoy were two customized McLaughlin-Buick convertibles that would take the royal couple through towns and villages.
The King and Queen arrived in Quebec City aboard the HMY Empress of Australia on May 17, 1939, to a huge and eagerly awaiting crowd. These moments of jubilation were repeated at every stop on the royal visit, which continued by train to Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Port Arthur (Thunder Bay), Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria, where the monarchs arrived by ferry, escorted by military ships and aircraft.
The return journey took a more northerly route, through Jasper and Edmonton. Every town and village welcomed the King and Queen with the same enthusiasm as on their arrival in Quebec City. At Niagara Falls, the royal train made a detour through the United States and returned to Canada near Montreal. It made its way through the Eastern Townships, up the St. Lawrence River to St. John and Charlottetown. In Halifax, Their Majesties delivered a farewell speech over the radio, but there was one last destination left: Newfoundland. They boarded the RMS Empress of Britain on June 15 and set course for the final stop on this royal tour, which marked a historic turning point in Canada's accession to the ranks of solid, sovereign nations.

Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 2014 Canadian $20 Silver Coin - Elizabeth II (First Royal Visit) is that it has a unique reverse design that features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt. This design is different from the typical effigy of the Queen that appears on most Canadian coins, and it was specifically designed to commemorate the Queen's first visit to Canada in 1951. The coin's design also includes a maple leaf, which is a symbol of Canada, and the coin's weight and purity are guaranteed by the Royal Canadian Mint.
