Comment
From permafrost in the north to deserts in the south, Canada's geography is richly diverse from coast to coast, and it's home to an extraordinary variety of forests, each with its own unique flora and fauna. The Columbia Forest grows in the midst of mountain ranges in southeastern British Columbia, some 600 kilometers from the Pacific coast. It is the world's only inland temperate rainforest, and most of its precipitation falls as snow, not rain.
The higher the altitude, the more difficult the growing conditions. Western yew (Taxus brevifolia) is one of the few tree species to have adapted to all these conditions. Characterized by its longevity and slow growth, it is also one of the few deconiferous species not to produce cones. Instead, it produces seeds individually protected by arils - fleshy husks resembling berries or red rubies - which rest on its slender branches.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case featuring the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case is accompanied by an illustrated protective box.
Interesting fact
The Columbian Yew Tree coin is a non-circulating coin, meaning it is not meant to be used as regular currency, but rather as a collectible item.
