The woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) is the only member of the deer family whose female also has antlers. According to some biologists, this may be due to the strong competition the caribou faces when foraging for lichens and other plants. Although the caribou's antlers grow and fall off each year, those of the pregnant female remain long after the male has lost his, possibly to provide an additional calcium reservoir for the pregnant calves.Caribou live in the most isolated regions of Canada, beyond the
49th parallel. It is categorized into three ecotypes, according to the specific adaptations and behaviors it has developed while living in different habitats. The tundra ecotype is the world's longest migrating land animal. After spending the winter in the boreal forest, it migrates to the tundra north of the 55th parallel in the summer to give birth, covering an incredible round trip of 6,000 km a year that perfectly illustrates the vastness of Canada.
