From permafrost in the north to deserts in the south, Canada's geography is richly diverse from coast to coast, with an extraordinary variety of forests, each with its own unique flora and fauna.Canada's boreal forest is immense. It forms an arc that stretches from the Rocky Mountains and the Alaskan border to the top of the Great Lakes, then north to Newfoundland and Labrador. As the forest moves further north, it becomes sparser and supports fewer species, until it reaches the treeless tundra.
The boreal forest is the first image that springs to mind when one thinks of Canada: a forest of snow-covered conifers. Although conifers are omnipresent in the landscape, the boreal forest is home to a few deciduous trees that manage to survive in this demanding environment. One of these is the balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera), one of Canada's hardiest deciduous trees. No other North American hardwood is found in such remote northern latitudes. What's more, although balsam poplar adapts well among conifers, it prefers open spaces along the water's edge.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case adorned with the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a black protective box.
