Did you know?
Cyanocitta cristata means "blue-crested, talkative bird".
The Blue Jay does not owe the color of its plumage to a blue pigment; in fact, its feathers contain melanin, a brown pigment. Rather, their coloring is due to the refraction of visible light by air pockets in the barbs. While other wavelengths are absorbed by the melanin, only blue light is refracted, so we perceive blue feathers. For example, if you crush a blue jay feather or put it under a black light, it no longer appears that color.
Black markings on feathers vary greatly from one individual to another, perhaps facilitating recognition between conspecifics.
An intelligent bird with an excellent capacity for adaptation, the Blue Jay produces a multitude of sounds, from a loud squawk to a hawk-like imitation. But one of its strangest behaviors is formicage, which consists of rubbing ants on its feathers, possibly to get rid of parasites or to reduce the insect's toxicity before eating it.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a double-shell case adorned with the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a black protective box.
