Comment
Because of its distinctive curved horns, the bighorn sheep is one of the most easily recognized species in the alpine meadows and high altitudes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Thanks to its remarkable agility, it is perfectly adapted to its natural environment, leaping up rocky escarpments to reach seemingly inaccessible flats with ease. The Royal Canadian Mint is proud to dedicate a magnificent pure silver coin to this species of wild sheep.A timeless symbol of power, strength and endurance, the bighorn sheep is an emblem of wild Canada, as evidenced by its Latin name, Ovis canadensis, meaning "Canada sheep".
Did you know it?
- The bighorn sheep's sense of smell and hearing may be poorly developed, but its great visual acuity enables it to discern the subtlest of movements a kilometer away in an open mountain landscape.
- The impressive curved horns are characteristic of the male, or ram, and can weigh more than all the bones in the skeleton put together. The female, or ewe, has smaller, pointed horns.
- Bighorn sheep can move over rocky slopes as little as 5 centimetres deep, thanks to their cloven hooves, which have both a rigid outer tip to grip the rock and a softer, more flexible inner pad.
- Grass is the staple diet of the bighorn sheep, which is able to store large quantities of undigested grass in its four-compartment stomach so that, once at altitude, it can regurgitate, chew and digest it.
- The bighorn sheep is a social animal. Living separately in herds with a well-established social organization, rams and ewes only meet during the rutting season in autumn.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case featuring the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a specially designed protective box.
Interesting fact
The Bighorn Sheep coin, minted in 2015, is the first coin in the Royal Canadian Mint's "Wildlife in Motion" series to feature a species that is not native to Canada. The Bighorn Sheep is actually native to the western United States, but it has been featured on a Canadian coin as a symbol of the country's commitment to conservation and wildlife preservation.
