The currency of Honduras is named after Lempira, a chieftain of the indigenous Lenca people, who waged war against Spanish occupation of the country during 16th century. He is revered as a national hero.

These coins were introduced in 1931 to supplement the circulation of , as they were the same value at the time. United States coins gradually left circulation over the next decade. Due to a shortage of national currency in 1943, Dimes were imported to circulate alongside these pieces.
