Samoas crest borrows heavily from the United Nations emblem with a cross-hatched background behind the shield. The bottom half of the shield has the Southern Cross constellation as featured on the flag of New Zealand which administered the islands until independence in June 1962. Above the constellation, you will notice waves and a single coconut palm tree. This is one of several coins in the 2020 Serpent of Milan collection, issued by the Samoan government in partnership with the Scottsdale Mint. This series embodies the history and design of Middle Age Milan. The historic image depicted on the 1 oz Silver coin is the emblem of the illustrious Visconti of Milan, one of Italy's most powerful families. This symbol can be found today in select Milanese locations and is also featured within the logo of Italian automobile maker Alfa Romeo.
