Comment
The 2 sterling and 4 sterling denominations were issued briefly in 1366 when the large 2 groot met de leeuw (plak) coinwith the same design began its issue. The precise numbers of each that were struck is unknown. Mint records state that 963 marks of silver (about 235 kg) were used for both types, so the numbers for each were likely in the high tens of thousands.
The 2 sterling (=1/3 plak) coin was unknown until 1979, and is still unique. It sold for 14,000 euros at Elsen auction 136 in March, 2018
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during the reign of Louis II de Male, who was the Count of Flanders from 1346 until his death in 1384. During his rule, he sought to promote trade and commerce in the region, which led to the minting of coins like this one. The coin's silver content and weight also make it a valuable and collectible item for numismatists today.
