The reverse design of the Irish coins features a series of animals important to Ireland's predominantly agricultural economy.
The animal chosen for the florin is a salmon. The fishing industry was (and is) very important to the Irish economy. The salmon represents both marine and farm fisheries.

The flóirín / florin comes from the Latin word florence, coins minted in Florence, and featuring a fleur-de-lis, symbol of the city. The French term, florin, was kept in English for England and the dependencies of the British Crown, while it was translated into guilder for the old currency of the Netherlands, the gulden, translated into French as florin.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1928-1937 Irish 2 Shillings/1 Florin coin is that it was designed by the Irish artist and sculptor, Percy Metcalfe. Metcalfe's design features a depiction of a stag on the reverse side of the coin, which has become a recognizable symbol of Irish coinage. The stag is surrounded by a wreath of shamrocks, further emphasizing the coin's Irish heritage.
