Date of issue: 23 JAN 1998Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein (22.01.1898 –11.02.1948) — the producer, artist, theorist of the cinema, pedagogue, doctor of art-criticism. His film «The Battleship «Potyomkin» is the highest achievement of the world cinematographic art. During the Brussels Film Festival in 1958 it headed the list of the 12 best films at all times in the world. S. Eisenstein also produced some other well known movies: «Alexander the Nevsky», «Ivan The Terrible», «The October», «The Strike» and staged the opera «Valkiriya» (by R. Wagner) in the Bolshoi Theatre as well. S.Eisenstein lectured at the State Institute of the Cinematography. Discoveries in the field of the film montage made him possible to suggest a conception of «the Intellectual Cinematography» as a synthesis of the art and science. The museum of S. Eisenstein was set up in Moscow.
