Date of issue: 16 DEC 1999Karl Pavlovich Bryullov (b. December 12 [December 23 New Style] 1799 d. June 11 [June 22, 1852 ]) — Russian painter and graphic artist. His creative work infused a spirit of romanticism and vitality into the painting of Russian classicism. The Bryullov's works are notable for dramatic density of images («Last Day of Pompeii»), realistic trends, subtle psychological insight (the self portrait, portraits of A. N. Strugovschikov, N. V. Kukolnik, M. Lanchi), the affirmation of the sensible and plastic beauty of human being («Virsaviya»). Karl Bryullov was a brilliant master of the smart portrait. He used to live in Italy in 1823-1835 and since 1850.
