Comment

Crudely produced, as one might expect of emergency coins struck by Don Antonio Adriazola, a local estate owner, and authorized by the Governor of Valdivia. The coins were struck with silver taken from local residents, and used to pay the local garrison. An extremely rare one-year type. Only four pieces of the 2 Reales have been certified by NGC, two with the countermark and two without. None of the two reales have been certified by PCGS.

Interesting fact

The 1822 2 Reales coin from the City of Valdivia (Chilean States) made of Billon is interesting because it features a unique countermark, which is a stamp or marking added to the coin by a local authority to verify its authenticity and value. This countermark is a letter "V" surrounded by a wreath, which represents the City of Valdivia and indicates that the coin was issued by the local government. The use of countermarks was common in the early 19th century in Chile, as it helped to prevent counterfeiting and ensure the circulation of legitimate currency.
