COMMEMORATIVE COIN OF THE CENTENARY OF CANDIDO PORTINARIBorn in Brodósqui, in the interior of São Paulo State, on December 30, 1903, Portinari was - and still is today - one of the greatest Brazilian exponents of the plastic arts, in Brazil and in the world. Son of Italian immigrants, of humble origin, received only the primary education. His simple childhood, but rich in cultural values characteristic of the interior of Brazil, served as his inspiration.
Portinari painted the Brazilian people, the simple things of their land, always in two strands, two interpretations, which are completed: one of them, which showed misery and social problems, stamped on the faces suffered by the Brazilian people: returnees, farmers, Washer; The other, lyrical, presented the jokes of the simple children of the interior, and the festivals and popular traditions. Two portraits of the same Brazil. Portinari's Brazil, which he presented to Brazilians and the rest of the world, winning numerous awards. His work is also characterized by concern for peace, which finds expression in the War and Peace panels, installed at the UN headquarters in New York. Portinari died on February 6, 1962, a victim of intoxication from the paints he used in his work.
