The International Polar Year (IPY) is a recurring event of international collaboration in the study of the polar regions (Arctic and Antarctic). This "label" was created following the realization that the scientific observation of geophysical and climatological phenomena could only be carried out effectively through international coordination, and not just by individual nations. The first edition was conceived by Karl Weyprecht, an officer in the Austro-Hungarian navy who never saw the project realized during his lifetime, in 1882-1883.
