One interesting fact about this coin is that it commemorates the centenary of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, also known as the Endurance Expedition, which was led by Sir Ernest Shackleton in 1914-1917. The expedition aimed to cross the Antarctic continent from coast to coast, but the ship, Endurance, was trapped and crushed by ice, forcing the crew to abandon ship and survive on the ice for 22 months before being rescued.
